Why adding skip logic to your survey will benefit your data

$

0

Have you ever wanted to have respondents skip questions in certain parts of your survey?  With QuickSurveys, it’s an effortless functionality to add and will give you the correct data you’re after.

Let’s start with what skip questions means. What we’re referring to is skip logic that’s set via a filter, which allows you to have respondents skip questions that may not be applicable to them based on their responses to some of your survey questions. This way, you’ll have them answering questions relevant to them, and skipping those questions which are irrelevant. For example, if your first question to your survey is: Which of the following pets, if any, do you currently own? If the answer option “bird” is not checked, you will have those respondents skip to question 3.  Here you can ask them a more qualified question, like: “You said you don’t have a bird. Have you ever thought about owning one?”

To create your own skip filter like the one mentioned above, follow these simple steps:

1. Once your survey is programmed, navigate to the page you’d like to set your skip from.

2. Click the Pencil/Edit icon in the top right corner:

p1

3. Once the Editing view is open, select ADD FILTER on the right:

p2

4. Select NOT CHECKED (highlighted in blue), then select the answer which when selected will take the respondents to another page (you may select more than one answer).

5. Once you’ve selected your answer(s), click GO TO PAGE and choose where you’d like these respondents to land. (In the example below, if bird is not selected the respondents will land on page 3.)

checked1

6. Click CREATE FILTER to finalize your work and be sure to click SAVE on the bottom right to commit your filter.

p4

Tip: It’s easiest to create skips if you place one question per page, this way you don’t chance respondents landing on a page with more than one questions, one of which may not apply to them. If you’re placing multiple questions on a single page, make sure to preview your survey to ensure the progression is logical to the respondent. The preview option is available on the bottom left of any page of the build screen (shown below).

p5

Now you’re a pro and will have all of your respondents answering only those questions that are applicable to them. This will not only give your respondents a logical structure they’ll appreciate as they navigate through your survey, but your survey data will also be cleaner, as you won’t have respondents answering questions that aren’t applicable to them. Head over to your account and set your own skips now!

It just keeps getting better – Piping and Masking are now available on QuickSurveys!

You’ve been asking, and we’ve been listening! We’re happy to announce the addition of Piping and Masking to the QuickSurveys platform.

For those of you new to the terminology, piping is used to transfer data between a source question and a target question, where selected answers in the source question will be added to the question text of the target question. Masking is then used to transfer data between a source question and a target question, where selected answers in the source question will be added as answer options in the target question.

So why are these new features important? They offer more ways to customize the survey experience for your respondents! It makes it easy for respondents to answer follow-up questions based on answer selections they’ve made by reminding them of what those answers were. This way, only relevant information is displayed.

Ready to learn how to use these features? Here we go…

How to add Piping:

Step 1: Start by opening the page of your survey that contains the question you want to add the piping to, and click the pencil (edit) icon in the top right corner. (NOTE: You cannot add piping to the first page of a survey.)

Do you have surveys in your QuickSurveys account that have similar titles, generic titles (Lifestyle, Entertainment, Travel) or maybe titles in other languages? This can understandably make it difficult for you to easily distinguish the details of each survey. For this reason, QuickSurveys offers the internal name feature, created so you can give you surveys a more descriptive label! Internal names are visible only to you through your survey management page and can be modified at any time.

Recently at Toluna QuickSurveys, we added two innovative features to our DIY survey platform: Random Assignment and Secure Video Hosting.

With Random Assignment, users can easily execute a multitude of studies within QuickSurveys, including concept testing, ad and messaging testing, iterations and more. Users can now test multiple versions of a concept with their target audience and rest assured that any changes observed after comparing the data are due to the concepts themselves — not the characteristics of the audience.

How does Random Assignment work?

This feature randomly assigns respondents to ensure each respondent has an equal chance of being assigned to a concept group.

random assignment

How to use random assignment when building a survey:

1. Upload the 1st concept, add video

2. Click “Add” located to the bottom right of the upload box once the concept has been selected and uploaded

3. Add questions within that block by clicking on the Add menu located beneath Concept 1.  From this menu, insert questions and page breaks as needed.

4. Repeat steps 1-3 to create more concepts.  Feel free to duplicate the Main Concept, or Duplicate the Main Concept questions.

5. Select # of concepts to be randomly shown to respondents using Least Fill Quotas dependent on if the survey should be Monadic (1 concept per respondent) or Sequential Monadic (numerous concepts per respondent).

The number of concepts vary based on the number of randomized blocks you select at the top right of the page.  For example, if 4 concepts were programmed, and 1 was selected from the Randomized Blocks Option at the top right of the screen, each respondent will randomly see 1 concept block.  If 2 was selected, each respondent will randomly see 2 out of the 4 concept blocks.

10 Market Research Terms to Know

$
0
0

You don’t need to be a pro to use QuickSurveys. There are, however, some key market research terms that are helpful to know before creating a survey for the first time.

Survey creation tips1

Below are the 10 most common terms you’ll come across when creating a survey or conducting market research.

Completes – The number of completed surveys. This does NOT include screenouts.

Feasibility – The likelihood that a particular sample request can be met using the available resources.

Incidence -The number of respondents who qualify for a survey based on targeting options. (Why do I need this?)

Panel – A market research panel is a group of recruited survey respondents who have agreed to take part in surveys and have shared a substantial amount of information about themselves to be used for sample selection. For example, Toluna.com (otherwise known as AskToluna) is Toluna’s proprietary global panel of millions of highly engagement consumers who are ready to answer your surveys!

Respondent – The individual who is taking the survey.

Response Fatigue – This is when a respondent is reluctant to continue their participation in a project. This typically occurs towards the end of a project and can lead to invalid responses. For this purpose, QuickSurveys limits the number of questions per survey to 35.

Representative Sample – A sample that contains units in the same proportion as the population of interest.

Sample – A subset of a population from which data is collected to be used in estimating parameters of the total population.

Screenout – When a potential respondent does not meet the specific demographic or usage criteria to take the survey.

Weighting – When a response from an individual (or all) subgroups are assigned statistical weights. This is best when looking to see what the importance of one subgroup is within the population of interest.

NEW feature added to QuickSurveys: Hide the Back Button and Survey Title

$
0
0

What are they?

The Hide Back Button option removes the ability for respondents to navigate backward to previous survey pages, prohibiting them from editing their responses.

The Hide Survey Title option will prohibit respondents from ever seeing the title of your survey.

Both features are free to use for all QuickSurveys users and can be found using the steps below!

Why do you need it?

Hiding the ‘Back’ button or Survey Title is another way to customize your survey to help reduce respondent bias throughout the survey experience. More specifically, hiding the ‘Back’ button enables the capture of the respondents’ initial reactions/responses, thereby reducing bias. The same goes for hiding a Survey Title; in some cases, if a respondent knows the title, they may then know the survey subject, and be more likely to select answers that advance them through the survey to receive the maximum incentive. (see the Benefits of a Generic Survey Title)

How do I access these features?

1. Log into your account, and select Create Survey in the top header.

1

2. Once on the Define page, click on Customize Survey:

1

3. You’ll then be able to see the options to Hide Back button and Hide Survey Title in the bottom right of the screen. Simply select the features you’d like to apply to your survey.

Comprehensive Guide to Question Types

$

0

The QuickSurveys tool offers many question types to include in your survey as well as text/video elements (more on elements soon). If you want to look like a pro, we suggest using a variety of question types to keep the respondent engaged.

Here’s a comprehensive list of all questions types our platform offers:

Choice Question

Respondents can either select one answer or multiple answers based on your question settings. In the picture above, respondents are asked to “select all that apply”, or select multiple answers.

choice

Other features:

  • You can add a comment field to this question which would appear in the survey as “Other, please specify” to the respondent.
  • The question can appear as a list, in columns, or as a drop-down menu.

Open End Question

This question type is useful for answering a “how, why, what or when” questions. Respondents may enter text, a date, a time, or a date and time as their answer. Please note that survey pros use this question type sparingly. Providing answers to respondents in other question types gives you more quality data.

open end

Matrix / Cross Question

This question type allows you to show your question in the form of a table or an items list.

matrix Here are the limitations for this question type:

  • 15 Matrix / Cross questions are allowed per survey.
  • Maximum of 35 columns and 35 rows per question.
  • Exclusivity can be amongst rows, columns, or both.
  • Randomization can be amongst rows, columns or both.

Options within Matrix / Cross questions:

  • Add Comment Field: Enables the respondent to type in their answer as either a row, column, or both.
  • Add General Comment Field: This will give respondents the option to type their answer instead of answering the Matrix / Cross question.
  • Columns: The choices that appear to the top of your scale in the matrix view, or as choices for the headers in the items list view.
  • Rows: The choices that appear to the left of your scale in the matrix view, or as headers in the item list view.
  • One Per Row / Column: Indicates only one answer should be chosen per row.  (You can always preview the example)
  • Answer All Rows / Columns: Indicates if all rows or columns should be answered by the respondent.  (You can always preview the example)
  • Randomize Rows / Columns: Randomizes the order of all rows, columns or both.

Viewing options for Matrix/Cross questions:

  • Items List:  Rows display as headers, and columns display as choices below each item.
  • Table:  Each Item in a matrix will appear as a different row in the grid.

Rating Question

This question utilizes preset scales and customizable weights and is typically most useful for finding levels of agreement, likeability, interest, and more.

rating

Guidelines:

  • Maximum of 15 rates and 25 items per question.
  • Option to include an exclusive comment field below the rating grid.
  • Rates and values are customizable.
  • Preset scales are as follows:
Agreement Concern Extent Familiarity
Frequency Helpfulness Importance Interest
Likelihood Purchase Quality Quality Rating
Reflect Me Relative Quantity Satisfaction Create Your Own

Setting scaled questions as Rating will allow you to gather statistics like mean, median, standard deviation and standard error in just one click within the TolunaAnalytics report.  This can be a huge time-saver!

Question options for Rating questions:

  • Add General Comment Field: This will give respondents the option to type their answer instead of answering the rating question.
  • Items: What respondents are rating.
  • Rates: Your rating scale.
  • Must rate all items: Requires each of the items to have answer an associated rate.  (You can always preview the example)
  • Use each rate once: Each scale point is only able to be associated with an item on the list one time.  (You can always preview the example)
  • Randomize Items:  All items will be randomized for each respondent.
  • Show weight in report:  All weights assigned to rates will appear in your reports.

View options for Rating questions:

  • Line Scale: Allows respondents to click or drag their cursor to their answer. A line scale will appear for each Item and each Item will be listed above its respective scale.
  • Matrix:  Each Item in a matrix will appear as a different row in the grid.

Numeric Question

This question type allows respondents to enter their answer as numbers only.

numeric

Guidelines:

  • If “answer range” is selected, the respondent’s answer must be in that selected range. Both a minimum and maximum are required to utilize this option.
  • Selecting “decimals” permits decimals to be entered as an answer.

Ranking Question

The respondent has the ability to rank choices exclusively. The most common uses for this question type include asking respondents to “Select your top 3″ or “Rank in order of importance.”

rank

Guidelines:

  • No more than 20 answers can be ranked within one ranking question
  • If “answer range” is selected, the respondent’s answer must be in that selected range. Both a minimum and maximum are required to utilize this option.
  • Selecting “I don’t know / I don’t want to answer” will clear all selections and let the respondent proceed.  This text is completely editable and will always be exclusive and anchored to the bottom of the list of answers.
  • Use this question type, if you would like to require a certain amount of answers to be selected in a question.

Available formats:

  • Clicking Order:  The order in which a choice is clicked represents the value of the selection.
  • Drag and Drop:  Respondents drag choices on the left to the boxes on the right

Multiple Textboxes Question

This question type allows for answers to be in the form of multiple textboxes, multiple date and times, multiple numeric answers, or a combination of all 3. Common uses for this question type include, “What are the first 3…”, “How many times…”, and “When are your pets’ birthdays?”.

multi textt

Available formats:

  • Open End:  Answers will be in the form of an open-ended response. Maximum of 1,000 characters permitted per text box.
  • Date and Time:  Collect date, time, or both. Respondents will have to enter time on the basis of a 24hr clock, and results will be reported on the basis of a 24hr clock.
  • NumericOnly numbers are permitted as answers. Ranges can be set and decimals may be included. If “Range” is selected, a minimum and maximum must be set.

Thumbs Question

This question type allows the respondent to give a thumbs up or thumbs down to an image or video. Common uses for this question type include asking if a respondent likes a concept, image, video, etc.

thumb

Guidelines:

  • It is required that you upload or select an image or video
  • Add an exclusive comment field is optional, and if selected, respondents can type an answer and will not have to select a thumbs up or down.
  • The text label that will appear below the image is optional.

Battle Question

This question type allows for the respondent to pick “this” or “that.” For example, you may compare two product labels (new and old) to gauge the performance of each.

battle

Guidelines:

  • Label text is required, but it is optional to display to respondents.
  • Two images or video are required to be entered in this question and the respondent is required to choose one answer.
  • Add an exclusive comment field is optional, and if selected, respondents can type an answer and will not have to choose an image or video.

Tiles Question

This is similar to the Choice question type, though choices are displayed inside tiles. The images fit to the size of the tile.

tiles

Guidelines:

  • Including a comment field allows respondents to type a response without selecting a tile.
  • Images may be added to tiles with or without accompanying text.

View options for Tiles Questions:

  • Small Tiles:  Choices will appear in smaller tiles
  • Big Tiles:  Choices will appear in larger tiles. If images are included, images will also display larger.

When To Use Alphabetization, Randomization, and Numeric Order in QuickSurveys

$
0
0

Survey pros know the strategies to create a survey that is engaging to the respondent, yet also produces the most accurate and unbiased results. The following strategies are used across the board by survey pros. Read on to find out when to randomize, alphabetize, and use numerical order.

Randomization

Randomization is one of the best ways to combat some of the downsides of survey research; bias, and speeders (people who complete surveys as quickly as possible). Think of it as shuffling a playlist. When you randomize, you are shuffling the choices so that each respondent sees the list of responses in a different order. This strategy forces the respondent to actually read through all options to select an honest answer, and in addition ensures that bias is spread randomly. When you want to randomize, all you need to do is click on “Randomize Answers” on the top right corner when creating a question.

randomize

Randomization is most useful when creating a single choice or grid question. For example: when asking a question about something widely recognized, like a set of popular foods or beverages randomization is very useful.

While randomization is helpful in efforts to remove biases in your data, it is not always applicable, and there are other types of response lists when randomizing is not the best option. For example,  avoid randomization when creating a rating scale question, like frequency or importance (not important, slightly important, very important). You’ll want these options to stay in a logistical order.

Along with rating scales, some other lists that should be given a second thought to when randomizing are:

Extensive Response Lists: Some brands lists, depending on the category, can feature a tremendous amount of item choices. For example, the category “Chocolate Candy Bars” can contain enough items that would make it difficult on respondents who are trying to find and select their favorite among a randomized list. In this case, leaving the list in alphabetical order is best.

Chronological Style Response Lists: Similar to scales, some response options that are also best left unrandomized are lists that have a chronological order or flow to the different selections. While we tend to see these more commonly in demographic questions such as “How old are you?” which may contain age ranges such as “18-25” and so on, it is also best to not randomize response lists that appear in questions such as “What time of day would you use this product?” that include response options such as “As soon as I wake up” and “The middle of my day” among other options.

Alphabetization

Essentially, alphabetizing provides an organized display of answer options that can reduce confusion for participants. Alphabetization is an additional way to keep choices unbiased as well. Use alphabetization when you have a list of brand names, or a list of options twice “Target Brand Art Supplies, Target Brand Soap, Target Brand Toilet Paper.”  See how visually pleasing alphabetization can be:

Numerical Order

Response options in numerical order have a number of important uses in survey research. Use numerical order when asking the respondent to write an exact number, like the example below.

rank

Another use for numerical order is for a ranking question. If you want your respondents to rank or compare a number of items from their most to least favorites (for example: Please rank the following types of soda from 1-5, #1 being your favorite).

How to Create Subpopulations in TolunaAnalytics

TolunaAnalytics is QuickSurvey’s advanced survey reporting tool that allows you to crosstab any of your questions against each other, create subpopulations, filters and much more. Subpopulations can be helpful when you want a more in-depth look at your respondents.

  • Subpopulation: is used to define a group of respondents based on additional characteristics from the survey or a subset of the total sample. Females would be a Subpopulation of the total population that included males and females.
  • Cross-tabulations: Or “Crosstab” is when you break out answers to questions by different groups of people (e.g., men versus women, city versus city, young versus old, Ad A versus Ad B, etc.).
  • Banner: The heading for a page of cross-tabulations.

When creating a subpopulation in TolunaAnalytics, you are selecting those groups of respondents based on their answers or combinations of multiple answers.

There are four types of subpopulations:

  • Simple - Uses “or” between the different questions of the survey
  • Advanced - Can define complex and/or logic between groups
  • Nested - Create a tree of groups within groups (These groups will be based using “and” logic. An example would be “nested” age and gender resulting in people who are both female and between the ages of 18-34
  • Category - Used to display multiple groups, although each group remains independent

Today we’ll start simple, and create a basic subpopulation:

You will be able to create subpopulations in the data from the “Analyze” drop down in your Toluna Analytics Link.

1

To start, select “Subpopulations” in the drop down.

2

You can also achieve this by clicking the shadow figures just to the right of the drop downs:

3

From there, create subpopulations from the options listed here:

4

Once your subpopulations are created and saved in your subpopulation window, click inside the gray margin to the left of the subpopulation description.

A check mark should appear in the margin. From there, select “Cross with all” at the bottom right-hand portion of the window, and your subpopulations will be created within your Data.

5

After you cross the subpopulation with your data, you will be able to analyze the different subpopulations within your Toluna Analytics link.

If you follow the blog, you’ve likely seen that we released some pretty exciting targeting features for users who could benefit from a more complex targeting solution.

With these new features, available via the AskToluna Pro launch option, QuickSurveys users now have access to over 200 demographic and profiling categories when sending their survey to Toluna’s global panel of more than 13 million consumers.

Also included with AskToluna Pro are on-demand feasibility and customization options for specific ranges, nested quotas and more. Complex studies that previous required manual intervention can now be done on a DIY platform in just a few clicks – with no manual intervention needed! See below for more information, including how to access these features.

What is it?

Our advanced targeting options can be accessed through AskToluna Pro.

Features include:

  • Select up to 25 demographic targets
  • Select up to 50+ profiling targets
  • DMA & MSA targeting capabilities
  • Postal Code targeting
  • Real-time feasibility
  • Add interlocking quotas

How is this different from the AskToluna launch option?

Both the AskToluna and AskToluna Pro launch options can get your survey to to the world’s largest social voting community of more than 13 million global consumers. The main difference is AskToluna Pro allows for behavioral profiling and customization of targets, quotas, postal code targeting, DMA/MSA targeting and real-time feasibility. AskToluna will work as it always has, enabling you to send to general population or target by up to 3 demographic targets as well as send to your own list of contacts.

How do I access this feature?

From your QuickSurveys dashboard, click on Create Survey and choose AskToluna Pro

1

On Define your Survey Page

  1. Name your survey (for help on this, see this blog post)
  2. Select a category
  3. Adjust the appearance of your survey

Access AskToluna Pro targeting capabilities by clicking on the Target Respondents button

2

Select Country and Number of Respondents for your survey.

  • The population incidence rate (IR) will determine how many completes your survey will receive.
  • Respondents are the total number of respondents who will view the first page of your survey, not the number of respondents who will complete your survey.
  • When selecting a respondent number, be sure to consider screening and/or filtering parameters that will be included in your survey.
  • You may need to increase the number of “starts” to obtain the number of completes you require.
  • The days in field will reflect the minimum number of estimated days required to fulfill your survey request based on the targets selected, number of respondents requested, and the length of the survey. This field is not editable, nor can it be changed as it is automatically calculated to return the minimum value. Adjust accordingly or contact our help desk for assistance.

Selecting Demographics and/or Profiles will activate drop-down menus displaying target categories available through AskToluna Pro. Use the scroll bar or search feature to view and find the appropriate target categories for your survey.

3

Click on the demographic and profiling targets that you need, drag and drop to the left of the screen where it says “Add Targeted Quota Here.”

4

For each Profile Category there is a list of supported questions, each of which has several supported responses that can serve as qualification criteria for your respondents.

The demographic targets include:

  • Age
  • Annual Household Income
  • Children under 18
  • DMA
  • Education
  • Ethnicity
  • Gender
  • MSA
  • Number of people in Household
  • Postal Codes
  • Race
  • Religions
  • State
  • Work Position

The 50+ profiling targets you can use include are contained in the following categories:

  • Personal– information that may change frequently and specific to the respondent or his or her household, such as pregnancy, salary or income;

  • Employment – further details about the respondent’s employment;
  • Finance – details about the financial assets of the respondent and/or the respondent household;

  • Internet – use of the internet;
  • Mobile – mobile specifics, such as type, cellular service;
  • Shopping – grocery stores and alcohol preferences; and
  • Personal Interests and Beauty – preferences around hobbies, activities, and beauty pursuits.

4

For each target you choose, you will need to enter a number of respondents you require for that target, or a percentage. The percentage/number should add up to your original respondent requirement (in this example, the number should add up to 100).

If the target is feasible, you can hit continue and go to the Build page where you can start entering your questionnaire per usual.

If the quota is not feasible, try changing your selection criteria under the targets, number of respondents, or the combination of both. Still seeing your target as not feasible? Contact our help desk.

5

Once you have selected your targets, click “Continue” to take you to the standard Build page where you can create your questionnaire, and then launch!

Filter Logic in QuickSurveys

Using filters in your survey not only provides a better experience for the respondent but also produces better and accurate information for your data.

When it comes to creating filters and conditions for those filters, the terminology can get a little confusing. You’ll see the words “checked, not checked, and, or.”  When reading the logic aloud it sounds grammatically incorrect which making this process a little confusing. This post exists to set the record straight.

Hover Messages for Filter Logic

CHECKED:  If the respondent selects these answers in the survey, then…

NOT CHECKED:  If the respondent does not select these answers, then…

OR:  If any of the answers ticked are / aren’t selected by the respondent, then…

AND:  If any of the answers ticked together are / aren’t selected by the respondent, then…

EXPLANATIONS AND EXAMPLES OF LOGIC

“Checked” Options

CHECKED / AND:  If all answers checked are selected by the respondent, the respondent will screen out.  In this example, if Action, or only Adventure are checked, will also screen out. If Crime is selected, then the respondent will continue.

1

CHECKED / OR:  If any of the checked answers are selected in the survey, the logic will trigger.  In this example, if Crime is selected and not Action and not Adventure, the respondent will be allowed to continue.

2

CHECKED:  If the checked answers are checked, then the action will trigger. In the below scenario, if “No” is selected by respondents in the live survey, they will screen out. 3

Not Checked Options

NOT CHECKED / OR:  If any of the checked answers are not selected in the survey, then the logic will trigger.  In this example, if either Action or Adventure were not selected, the screen out logic will trigger.  The only way to continue is to have BOTH Action and Adventure selected.

4

NOT CHECKED / AND:  If neither Action nor Adventure are checked in the survey the respondent will screen out.  Alternatively, if only Action, or only Adventure were selected by the respondent, the respondent will continue with the survey.
